Topic on title. I stumbled into a free online face-swapping app and started testing it, seeing how it works while using some of my own photos with masks.

I'll admit the results aren't always extraordinary (some swaps are rightfully cursed) but others look pretty decent. It's obvious that the result isn't perfect (the dead eyes are a giveaway, and so does the smooth face reveal vs. the graininess of the camera) but it's a fun experiment.

Have you experimented with AI faceswapping apps before, either replacing your own face or replacing a mask's look? I do feel faceswapping won't replace masking (there is a charm to try to provide some life to silicone) but it's an interesting point of view, since the app is essentially making a digital mask for you to "wear".

Do note that if you feel disgusted by AI, you're free to say so. It's definitely not for everyone, and it's as much valid opinion as if you like it or simply tolerate it.

AI is definitely a work in progress. It'll get better in a few months from now, but as it stands it leaves a lot to be desired

Yeah. It all seems to involve making the right prompt - as someone said in a site I frequent (speaking about ChatGPT as a tool), it's like doing a commission to an Indian techie. You need to guide LLMs carefully so you get the desired results.

Ultimately, it's all about being satisfied with the results. The pic to the left, for example, only had AI do the face-swapping. The rest was just very basic (like, MS Paint basic) photomanipulation and organizing into a collage to create the illusion of a spy preparing to wear a mask of someone else. It's not perfect but it's enough to suspend disbelief and tell a story. With better skills, the scene would've developed a lot better. With a good prompt, AI could've probably done this (the three pictures are mine, using a larger mask as the prop and actually wearing it at the end), but it would've taken a different amount of work and patience, probably for the same results.

Sure, LLMs and photomanipulation/image creation AI tools will most likely get better when fed all that data, but ultimately it'll stop at a point where the majority of people feel satisfied.
